Alice Springs, Saturday at the Desert Park

Went to the Desert Park west of Alice. This is a really well done park where you watch movies, stroll the paths, listen to the audio, watch the aboriginal show, spend an hour in the nocturnal house and get a good appreciation of the desert landscape and all the animals and plants that have adapted themselves to the conditions to survive. I went in thinking we’d be an hour, but we were in for a real treat and came out nearly 4 hours later.
The talk by the ranger on aboriginal culture was fascinating, their family system and language and skin groups, how they controlled their population to subsist from the desert landscape, a glimpse of the law system and of course a good range of plants and animals and how they hunt and gather them, and how they are prepared for eating or medicinal use. The desert we have been driving through for a week, and that which I have described as flat, lifeless and empty is anything but, if you only know what to look for.

Ain't I cute? You can call me a Thorny Dragon
