Jabiru NT

Slow and quiet day today, just catching up after the two big days on the road.

Wandered over to the Kakadu Info centre, Bowali in indigenous speak. Checked the guided tour time of Ubirr this afternoon, then sat and drank a nice coffee in slow time. As an aside, it is possible that the Bowali cafe has the cheapest lunch in Kakadu, only $6.50 for a toastie or $10 for a burger, as opposed to $24 for a steak sandwich at Cooinda and similar prices at Mary River.

Most important job today was to get some more insect killer - those bities! Yikes they bite you right through your clothes.

Anyhow, we turned up at Ubirr at the allotted hour. OMG, there were 10,000 freeloaders there already. And just one very quietly spoken Aboriginal guide. This was never going to work, so we tagged along for a short time then made a break on our own, especially as we had seen it all before

The art work seemed a bit more worn and weather damaged than last time, but the flood plains seemed greener by contrast.

I couldn't help but take some snaps of the tourist ants climbing all over the place, pretty off-putting actually, and it's not the height of the season yet.

On our way out Judy spotted a rock wallaby and of course we grabbed some shots of that as well. Just as you come out of the Ubirr area, there is the turnoff into Arnhem Land and the low level crossing of the East Alligator river. The claim to fame is that its infested with crocodiles, who line up across the weir at high tide with their jaw open, swallowing anything that washes over, e.g. barramundi. It's also known as a pretty good fishing spot, and these lunies think nothing of standing in the water fishing, even though the crocs are lurking about. Pure madness, all in the cause of catching a fish. Crazy.

Tomorrow we plan on being up at 530am to get to Cooinda to take the 630 sunrise tour of the Yellow River Billabong. Could be interesting.

  1. Great shots of the rock wallaby. Judy, if I was you I would be claiming that fish as one caught by you!!

  2. We too were stunned by the lunacy of fishermen standing thigh deep in silt-like mud presumably intending to outrun snapping handbags.
