Left early this morning ready for a short quick run down into Townsville ...... Brrrrrrr Wrong!
We got stuck behind a 1 tonne ute and a van and they were stuck behind a variable-speed flatbed road-train. Despite plenty of opportunity, neither would make a run at the truck and I couldn't from where I was, so there we sat, wandering up and down between 80 and 100 kph for the full 120km run into town. I never knew I had so much patience!
When we hit town we went to the big shops to get our prescriptions renewed, Judy has this ‘thing’ about sharing and wanted here own! The whole road system has changed dramatically in the last few years and you can see how they are trying to give the Bruce highway some priority over the suburbs of this huge sprawling city.
Anyhow, out of Townsville and up the mighty Bruce, great in parts, ‘horrible in the rest, and 53km north to our turn off down to the Big 4 at Rollingstone beach. It’s a big park with a lagoon in the middle and a frigid pool and its only saving grace is that it fronts right onto the beach. I use the the term beach in the generalist sense: like a lot of the far north coast its not a proper ocean beach because of the sheltering islands, and could revert to being mangrove swamps in the twinkle of an eye. having said that, it’s pleasant enough and it’s warm (well today anyway) and all we have to do is lounge around here for a few days. Could be worse, I reckon.
I went for a stroll along the beach, heading south, and took snaps of things that took my fancy.
