Tennant Creek 8/5/2012

Hit the road early, unsure as to how far we could go. The scenery is flat and monotonous, broken only by the odd roadhouse. Stopped at one of the ‘ticked’ free camps for lunch. They are ultra basic, at least this one had a single long-drop. Why anyone stays there for days and weeks at a time is a mystery, but there they were, all set up between the spinnifex on the claypans, with solar panels, satellite dishes, kitchen sink and not a speck of shade to be found. One outstanding feature in the otherwise featureless plains is the Devils Marbles, a field full of giant rounded rocks balancing precariously on top of each other. Passed the scene of a fatal accident probably not that long after it happened. Police everywhere, the road totally blocked: we were shown of the shoulder of the road and along the dirt. The debris was everywhere and most sickening. People drove noticeably slower once we got past.
