Tathra NSW, Merimbula, 100 foot journey

By yesterday morning, any thoughts of bright sunny warm days had disappeared under a heavy blanket of grey. Rain and wind and cold. Fortunately, we had already decided to travel the 25km to Merimbula to go to the movies. Yes, it's true, I went to an actual cinema and sat through a talking type movie. The last movie we saw was abysmal, which should have been its title, but which was something about a Bucharest Hotel. This time Judy had decided that something called 100 foot journey would be the go. I was sceptical and prepared to have a nap for the couple of hours or so that it took.

Much to my surprise, not only did i not have to resort to a coma-like state to endure the onslaught of visual inanity, but i found myself wide awake and enjoying the show immensely. Like all good movies, it has a most unlikely scenario, with an Indian family finding themselves in provincial France where they decide to open their Indian Cuisine restaurant right opposite a 1x Michelin star French choke & puke. Needless to say there is racial tension, sexual tension and hostilities. I'll say no more except that I think I'd now like to go and see some of the French countryside and try some food perhaps a bit more exotic than my normal fare.

Merimbula is huge compared to what I remember from my scuba diving days, but we restricted ourselves to a few of the big shops before heading out to explore the district, travelling as far down as Pambula Beach, where we found the most delightful little cove.

Today was not a lot better, at least it wasn't raining all the time. I have generously given my cold to Judy and we were being a bit slow today.  Not so slow as to miss the morning tea at 1030, where the few of us in the park sat around and ate our hosts' scones and drank tea. We retired to the van and only ventured out after a late lunch, and then only to go driving up past Bemboka in search of another of the Far South Coast Birdwatchers Bird Trails. It wasn't as good as the local one, basically all the birds have flown, or have gone into hiding until the sun comes out again, and we gave it away and came back via Candelo, picking up some snacks and wines in Tathra to help boost our wet weather immune systems.

  1. Glad you liked the movie. We did exactly the same thing in Ballina on a very wet day and we had exactly the same reaction to it as you did. It really does make you think a trip to rural France would be a good idea, doesn't it.

PS We will be home on Saturday.
