The long road Day 1

The Long Road

Friday 13 April 2012 – Day 1 Canberra to Holbrook

The day has finally arrived. After many months of preparation, elation, trepidation and impatience we are on our way.

We are not superstitious so were not worried about departure date but after a small problem before we even backed out of the driveway, we thought great, our mishaps are now behind us. Brian decided to fill our water tank in the van with fresh water before we left but didn’t notice that as he put the hose in the tank, he knocked off the end inside the van! With water pouring out from the van he quickly realised something was not quite right. Luckily he has rectified the problem for the moment and as soon as we come across a Bunnings a more permanent fix will be implemented.

We weren’t delayed for very long so left home saying goodbye to the cat who is being left with the housesitters. A quick visit to Mum and Dad to say farewell and then hit the road as far as Gold Creek to have lunch with Lauren and Daniel, Amy and Emily and Paul and Sue at the George.

We started to get edgy around 2pm and decided we couldn’t wait any longer. After the obligatory photos next to the van, lots of hugs, kisses and tears we were finally on our way. (Photos will be uploaded as soon as we sort out a minor technical glitch)

Once we were on the highway, we tuned into our UHF CB radio and listened to truckies on the airways. An amusing way to spend some time. A good run into Holbrook about 3 hours after we left Canberra. The car and van went well and we pulled into the Holbrook Caravan Park both relaxed and exhausted after the releasing of all the pent up anticipation of the last few months.

We walked into town, had a drink at the pub and then wandered on down to the RS and Golf club for a lasagne dinner as I really wasn’t interested in cooking. Back to the van where an early night is looking good. Nothing like good fresh country air to knock you for six!
