Innisfail, Qld

We left Port Douglas a day earlier than originally planned, mainly to miss the traffic around Cairns on Monday morning. As it was it took 30 minutes to reach the outskirts of Cairns and 45 mins to actually reach the other side.

Pretty easy run down to Innisfail where we found our van park, The Mango tree, tucked into a side street on the southern side of town. They got clobbered by the two big cyclones and have had to rebuild most of it from scratch. If the old photos are anything to go on, I think the cyclones did them a favour, at least it got rid of all those ugly old ‘permanents’ that are such a bane to the modern caravan park. Anyhow, it’s a lovely park, all clean and green and not at all crowded.

We went into town proper for lunch, but the choice was:fish and chips from a van at the wharf, the RSL, the pub or the Coffee Club. We chose the CC option and had a delightful meal and coffee. We also took a drive out to Coquette Point, which turns out to be the strip of land that runs out to form the south head of the Johnstone River, the houses have some pretty nice views…

From there we ventured further south to Etty Bay. The beach is a little hidden gem with a tiny caravan park and will definitely be on our tour list for the future.
