Capricorn Caves, The Caves Qld

We took ourselves out today to visit the Capricorn Caves, about 40km north of Rockhampton. We had just missed the 11am tour but were happy to wait for the midday one, electing to drink coffee and watch the video in the meantime.

Finally we were away, a short walk and short talk and we were in: we didn't really know what to expect as we have seen caves all over the place, some good some pretty ordinary. Anyhow, this is a dry limestone cave, with the roof way up high and the whole place riddled with caves and alleys and tunnels. There are a few of the normal cave type features like stalactites and mites and curtains and columns, but as its a dry cave, they only get to grow after it rains, so really really slowly. The main impact is the quantity and size of the holes and caverns, and they have done a pretty impressive job putting in walkways and bridges, even full wheelchair access.

the centrepiece is The Cathedral, the biggest of the caverns with a towering roof. It is of course fitted out with real church pews and has candles all around. They have weddings and dinners and operas down here, so it gets plenty of use. They turn off the lights and light up the candles up the front, then they play Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house..er cave.

You finish off by coming out through the 'zigzag' which is quite narrow and then finally across two swaying swing bridges.

Fortunately for all concerned, the resident bat colony had taken themselves to warmer climes for the winter!

Brilliant, probably the best cave tour we have done.

After the tour we went back to the little village of The Caves and had lunch at the original pub, built by the son of Olssen who found the caves in 1888.

We must have 10,000 snaps from the insides of caves, so here's a few more just for fun:
