We woke to overcast, blustery weather. By the time we had packed and were moving off, it was drizzling. Time to go it seems. We headed out of Adelaide, south to Victor Harbor and after a bit of confusion when a brand new motorway intruded into our navigation, we soon made it into our caravan park in Victor Harbor. First thing we noticed: its bloody cold! The wind was howling and appeared to be coming straight from the South Pole. Miserable it was.
Not to worry, we bolted back into town to catch the market before it finished and then to get some lunch and a nice hot coffee.
Victor Harbor dates from 1960 something (and before you all start abusing me on my poor spelling, there is no 'u' in Harbor) as a port to export produce from further inland and from up along the Murray River. There are some nice old buildings and things to look at; we choose to check out the museum before taking a stroll across to Granite Island.
In its heyday, after they extended the railway from port Elliott, where ships had a nasty habit of becoming shipwrecked, Victor Harbor was a busy port. part of the development was to extend the wharf right across to Granite island where they built a breakwater and a new wharf. they also extended the railway across to the island. In time the port as such fell out of favour and the railway and the causeway fell into disuse. Someone came up with the bright idea of reinstating the tramway to carry the throngs of sightseers over to the island. The Horse-drawn Tramway is the latest of several incarnations of the concept and is a lovely, if slow way to travel. We walked and depute the gale force winds it was still about 1000% faster: shanks' pony beats draught horse, hands down.
