Undara Qld July 20th 2023

The prospect of another long day in the car loomed, so up early and get things underway.

First step is Charters Towers to The Lynd, a distance of 260km. The Lynd is a roadhouse, not even that really. It's a fuel and coffee stop 260 km from Charters Towers, 256km from Hughendon and 190km from Undara. How's that for remote? There is another tiny dot about 160back toward CT, but it's no bigger than the Lynd.

I am happy to report that although the official report of the Gregory Development Road says that it's bad to 'horrible, the road is actually in remarkably good condition. I'd go so far to say that the stretch from the Lynd to The Savannah Way up near Mt Garnett is possibly one of the best in Queensland.

Filled up at the Lynd of course, didn't even look at the price. No point in risking them having fuel at Undara (they haven't as it turns out). The last leg of 190km was uneventful and easy going, getting us into Undara Lava Tube Lodge at about 1230. Well done us.

They've done two things at the Lodge, first of all they have taken the fire pit away and replaced it with a big deck. Second thing they have done is taken the sides ot of the two carriages used as dining rooms, and while I cringed at the wanton destruction of these old railway artefacts, the effect is actually rather good. So well done them.
